When a game’s tension comes from deadlines or combat, winding down can feel impossible. Arctico solves that by removing threats entirely and replacing them with methodical tasks.

Peaceful exploration — you move across an island at your own pace, uncovering ancient items and letters left behind by a mentor.

Base-building — the main loop involves collecting resources, running experiments, selling plant seeds, and expanding a scientific facility step by step.

Gear progression — you improve structures and sleds, then customise equipment with new paint jobs, giving each tool a personal look.

Gentle Gathering Loop With No Fail State

Players who enjoy low-stakes systems, sorting inventory, and reading every note will find a comfortable rhythm here. The loop is gentle: gather, return, upgrade, repeat. There is no fail state, so curiosity is the only driver.

Who might step away

If you need clear objectives, tight feedback loops, or any form of danger, the pace can feel aimless. Exploration is self-directed; progress relies on you wanting to see the next journal entry rather than a quest marker pushing you forward.

Watering the Planters at Dawn, Below Zero

I start at the main facility around dawn, when the light is low and the temperature gauge reads a few degrees below zero. The first five minutes are always the same: I water the three planter beds near the lab entrance and check the experiment logs for anything that matured overnight. One batch of high-yield seeds might have finished; I harvest the data, package the surplus seeds, and queue a new experiment with a different soil mix.

Next I check the sled. If I plan to cross into the eastern ridge — where the old weather station sits — I swap to the reinforced runners and load two extra fuel canisters. The inventory sits at 14 slots by default, so I leave behind anything not essential: the decorative crystals, the duplicate letters. Then I call the dogs and head out. The run takes about six real minutes. Along the way I stop twice: once at a small cave with a locked chest I haven’t opened yet, and once to collect the glowing moss that only grows on the north-facing rocks. That moss sells for nearly double the standard plant samples back at base.

By the time I return, the afternoon light has shifted. I sell the moss, buy the larger water tank I’ve been saving for, and spend the last ten minutes repositioning it behind the greenhouse. The whole session runs under an hour and nothing rushed me.

Quick-Stack Button Saves 30 Seconds Per Trip

  • Quick-stack to nearby storage: open any container and look for the button in the corner — it pushes matching items into that container without dragging each one. Saves about 30 seconds every return trip.
  • Dog commands from the sled: tapping the whistle key while seated makes the team speed up for a short burst. It consumes stamina, but the recharge is fast on flat terrain.
  • Paint preview before committing: the customisation bench shows a rotating preview of the selected paint job. You can spin the model with the arrow keys — the game never mentions this.
  • Hold to harvest multiple plants: keeping the interaction key pressed while walking past a row of planters picks every ready crop in sequence. Beats tapping per tile.
  • Map markers you place yourself: the map screen accepts custom pins with a right-click. I mark every ancient item location I cannot reach yet, so I don’t waste a second trip guessing.

Ignore the Far Island Until the Greenhouse Is Up

The first two hours set the tone for the rest of the save. I recommend ignoring the larger island until the base has at least the medium greenhouse and the upgraded sled storage. The reason is practical: long trips burn fuel, and without extra inventory slots you’ll leave behind rare samples that take real time to regrow.

Focus early income on plant seeds with short growth cycles. The blue-tinted seeds mature in roughly four in-game days and sell consistently. Avoid the decorative customisation items in the first few hours — they’re a drain on credits that could go toward the water collector upgrade, which pays for itself within three harvest cycles.

If you’re playing co-op, assign one person to experiment logs and one to sled maintenance. The game doesn’t enforce roles, but splitting the mental load keeps the pacing even. Also, the shared inventory near the lab bench is not labelled as shared — anything you place there is visible to all players, so use it as a drop point after expeditions.
