You press jump, then dash. Madeline shoots diagonally into a wall of spikes and respawns at the screen edge. It took three seconds. The next attempt, you dash a frame later and clear the gap. That rhythm — attempt, fail, adjust, succeed — is the core loop. You guide Madeline through single-screen rooms where the task is always the same: reach the exit. The tools are simple: a jump, a wall-climb that drains stamina, and an eight-directional air-dash that recharges when you touch the ground. The variety comes from how each chapter twists those tools. One area fills the screen with moving blocks that launch on contact. Another introduces a bubble you can dash through to gain momentum. Hidden side-paths fork off the main climb, offering cassette tapes that unlock harder "B-Side" remixes of completed levels.
Boss encounters replace combat with evasion sequences, weaving platforming into extended chase scenes. The two-hour soundtrack shifts from solo piano to layered synth as the mountain gets stranger. Everything is built around teaching through repeated failure; deaths cost only a second of time and the screen never fades to a menu. The mountain is split into bite-sized challenges, each one a self-contained puzzle of timing and trajectory.
