The current 1.9 Ultimate build packages the 1995 original and DOOM II into one ARM-native application, tested on a Mac mini 2024 M4 running macOS Tahoe. No gameplay features have been altered — what changed is the delivery format and architecture support.
Momentum addicts who dodge at 16.67 map units per tick
The space marine's journey across two Martian moons and into Hell remains a masterclass in momentum. Movement speed sits at a fixed 16.67 map units per tick, weapon switching is instant, and enemy projectiles are deliberately dodgeable. Players who enjoy reading a room in under a second — counting imps on a ledge, hearing a revenant's homing missile wind up behind them — will find the encounter design holds up. The combined release also means the Super Shotgun from DOOM II is available across both campaigns. Network multiplayer over LAN rounds out the package for anyone with a local opponent.
Players who expect vertical aim and skinned models
There is no vertical aim, no jumping, and no narrative beyond text screens between episodes. The 1995-04-30 codebase means sprite-based enemies always face the player, which can read as flat to eyes accustomed to modern GPU-skinned models. The 11-language interface support — spanning Russian, Korean, Japanese, and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese — is thorough, but anyone expecting controller haptics or HDR output will find none of it here.
Thinking it’s a cover shooter before imps punish at speed 10
The first dozen deaths usually come from treating DOOM like a cover shooter. Crouching behind geometry and peeking out to fire is a habit the 1995 engine punishes quickly — projectiles from imps travel at 10 map units per tick, and a stationary marine catches every one. The correct move is almost always forward, strafing in a wide arc while the autoaim handles vertical compensation.
A second common misstep is ignoring the fist and chainsaw against pinky demons. New players backpedal and waste shotgun shells, but the pinky has no ranged attack and a pain chance of 40% per hit from the chainsaw. Closing the gap and holding the trigger stun-locks it completely.
The third error is weapon hoarding. The plasma rifle carries a maximum of 300 cells, and the BFG9000 consumes 40 cells per shot. Saving both for a boss fight that never arrives means finishing the game with a full energy backpack while having struggled through the last two maps with the shotgun. The ammo placement in DOOM II's later levels — especially MAP23 and MAP29 — is generous enough that running dry is rare unless the player actively avoids pickups.
A speedrunner's morning session
Consider someone who has cleared both campaigns twice and now chases par times. They launch the game, switch the language to English in settings, and load MAP01 — Entryway. The goal is a sub-30-second exit on Ultra-Violence.
They straferun from the opening hallway, grabbing the shotgun at the first turn without slowing. The two zombiemen on the stairs are ignored — their hitscan damage is negligible at full health — but the imp on the ledge catches a single shell because its fireball blocks the narrow corridor ahead. The exit room's switch is slapped at 0:27, and the intermission screen confirms the par time is beaten by three seconds. The player then quits to Finder, right-clicks the app bundle, and drops a WAD file into DOOM.app/Contents/Resources/KS Games/DOOM/Mods — a custom map set they compiled the night before — and restarts to test a new route on a layout nobody else has run yet.
One purchase unlocks both 1.9 Ultimate campaigns
Does this build include both original games? Yes. The 1.9 Ultimate version on the product page is listed as a combined release: the original DOOM and DOOM II come together. You select which campaign to play from the in-game menu after launch.
Will mods break on Apple Silicon? Most do not. The Mods folder inside the app bundle loads WAD and PK3 files in alphabetical order. A file named 00_brutal.pk3 loads before z_music.wad, which is useful for controlling asset overrides. The engine reads standard DOOM mod formats, and the ARM build handles them identically to the x86 versions — tested on a 2024 M4 Mac mini.
Does multiplayer work over the internet or just LAN? The networking is local only — no built-in online matchmaking. You and another person on the same network can set up a co-op or deathmatch session through the multiplayer menu. Third-party source ports exist for those who need internet play, but they are separate from this combined release.
Is the music intact? Yes. The original soundtrack plays as music accompaniment, exactly as it did in 1995. No remastered audio or alternative recordings have been substituted.
- macOS: Tahoe or later (tested on a Mac mini 2024 M4)
- Architecture: Apple Silicon
