If you know the branching logic of a visual novel but wish it had a map, a ship, and a deity to appease, Fabled Lands is that structure scaled up. It adapts the gamebooks by Dave Morris and Jamie Thomson into a solo role-playing game where quests, trade, and tactical combat all share one open world.
Run It on Your Mac
The game runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Prime Games tested it on macOS Tahoe and on a 2024 M4 Mac mini, so current hardware is well covered.
Pick a Role and Play
Start as an explorer, trader, priest, scholar, thief, wizard, or mercenary. Your choices set the tone: you can join the king or work for a dictator, and Ironman mode makes every decision irreversible with permanent character death.
Manage More Than Combat
Beyond fighting, you trade goods, develop your character, and manage a ship with upgrades and crew. Temples offer deity blessings that shape how you approach the game's many settlements and storylines.
A Trader's Run Through Sokara
Here is a workflow that leans on commerce instead of combat. Start fresh as a trader and sail the Greywing to Yellowport. Dock, open the market screen, and check the local price of timber — it sits around 12–18 shards per unit. Buy as much as your hold allows, then set course for Marlock City, where timber regularly fetches 28–35 shards. The three-day voyage eats a little crew morale, so keep a barrel of rum aboard.
At Marlock, sell the timber, pocket the margin, and scan the market for gems. Marlock gems run cheap because the mines are nearby; pick up 10–15 units. Sail north to Metriciens, a scholar-heavy city that pays a premium for gems. Along the way, a random encounter rolls — a pirate sloop. With a trader's low combat stats, the safe move is to dump a few cargo crates as a distraction and slip away. Dock at Metriciens, sell the gems, and use the profit to upgrade the Greywing's hull at the shipwright. One loop, roughly twenty minutes, builds a financial cushion without drawing a sword.
Donating 50 Shards for the Unseen Blessing
It is 9 p.m. and the game loads your priest save, parked outside the Temple of Sig in Ravayne. You step inside, donate 50 shards, and receive the Blessing of the Unseen — +2 wisdom for the next twelve in-game days. The temple abbot mentions a missing relic, a side quest that sits dormant until you feel like chasing it, but tonight you have another goal: clear the smugglers' tunnels under the city.
You buy three healing salves and a torch from the market, descend into the tunnels, and hit the first narrative node. The text offers a choice — sneak past the guards or bluff your way through. Your priest has high charisma, so bluff it is. The dice roll succeeds, the guards wave you through, and you loot a chest holding 40 shards and a silver ring. Deeper in, a trap triggers. The game checks your agility; you fail, lose 6 health, and burn a salve. At the tunnel's end, a smuggler boss demands a fight. Tactical combat opens on a grid: you position behind a crate for cover, cast Holy Flame for 14 damage, then finish with a mace strike. The boss drops a map fragment. You surface in the city, sell the ring, save at the inn, and quit. The session lasted forty minutes and ended with one thread closed and a new lead in your inventory.
Set Text to Instant Before a Serious Run
Three adjustments make the game read and play more comfortably before you start a serious run.
- Text scroll speed. The default setting drags long passages. Under Options, set Text Speed to Fast or Instant. You still read every word, but the line-by-line drip stops.
- Ironman confirmation. Ironman mode is a single toggle in the character creation screen. If you want the tension of permanent death without an accidental click dooming a 20-hour save, leave it off and impose your own "no reload" rule instead. The menu does not ask for a second confirmation once it is on.
- Combat grid highlights. In the Gameplay tab, enable Show Move Range and Highlight Threatened Squares. The tactical grid becomes readable at a glance, and you stop walking into attacks of opportunity because a tile looked safe.
A small note for Mac players: if you run a display with a non-standard resolution, open Graphics and tick Borderless Window. It prevents the dock or menu bar from stealing clicks during combat turns. The game ships with music enabled by default; the volume slider sits in the same menu and rewards a quick nudge downward if you plan a long session.
