Fallout Shelter runs on Apple Silicon Macs. I tested it on a MacBook Air (M1, 2020) under macOS Sequoia, and the ARM-native build had no trouble holding 60 fps even with 50-plus dwellers milling about. Intel machines are not officially listed by Bethesda, though the game appears on iOS, Android, PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
Where the spreadsheets-and-timers crowd feels at home
This is a management game, not an action title. You build rooms, assign jobs and wait for timers to tick down. If you like spreadsheets, optimisation puzzles or the gentle pressure of keeping a small society alive, you will find a lot to like here. The loop is simple: expand the vault, attract new dwellers, train their SPECIAL stats and send them scavenging in the wasteland.
Dwellers have needs. Low happiness slows production, so you balance power, water and food while fending off radroach invasions and raider attacks. The radio room lets you call in fresh bodies from the surface, and scrap collected topside can be crafted into better weapons and outfits. The 1950s atomic-age aesthetic and the deadpan vault-boy animations give it a charm that holds up well.
The player who will bounce off it is someone who wants a story or a clear endpoint. There is no final mission. Once the vault is stable, the game becomes a sandbox where you set your own goals. If idle waiting annoys you, the early hours—where you tap a room and wait three minutes for water—will grate. The late game opens up, but it never stops being a management sim built around real-time clocks.
The mobile bones and ambient soundtrack beneath the vault
- The soundtrack is included and cycles through a few ambient tracks that fit the vault atmosphere.
- The game was originally a mobile title, and the interface still feels built for a touchscreen.
- Threats can arrive from inside—fires, infestations—or from the nuclear wasteland outside the vault door.
Power holds, food dips, and the 8 pm drag-and-repair ritual
I open the game around 8 pm, half-watching something on the second screen. The vault hums along at 48 dwellers. Power is in the green. Water is fine. Food dipped into yellow while I was away, so I drag two more dwellers into the diner and check their Agility stats—one has 3, the other 5. The 5 goes to the kitchen.
Three explorers are still out in the wasteland. One has been gone six hours and her inventory is filling with junk: a rusty BB gun, a teddy bear, 47 caps. I leave her. The second found a hardened sniper rifle at the four-hour mark but then ran into super mutants. She is at half health. I recall her—she will be back in 12 minutes. The third died two hours ago; I did not hear the notification. Reviving costs 240 caps. I pay it, then send him limping home.
A fire breaks out in the power generator. I tap dwellers from the water treatment room to help extinguish it. Their happiness dips slightly. While that cools down, I queue a new medbay on level four and start upgrading the radio room to attract a dweller with better Charisma. The timer reads 2h 14min. I check the barber shop, change one dweller's haircut for no real reason, and close the game around 9:30.
ARM-native wrapper ends the Intel scroll stutter on Apple Silicon
The 2.4.1 Wineskin package runs natively on Apple Silicon. Earlier Mac wrappers were Intel-only and chugged on M-series machines; this one does not. The ARM build eliminates the frame drops that used to hit when scrolling across large vaults with animated room sprites.
Language switching is simpler than it was. Older repacks buried the config file in nested Windows prefixes that required trial and error to locate. The current release places configs.user.ini in a predictable path inside the app bundle: Fallout Shelter.app/Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c/KS Games/Fallout Shelter/FalloutShelter_Data/Plugins/x86_64/steam_settings/. Changing language=russian to language=english takes under a minute in TextEdit, and the game restarts correctly the first time—no cache-wiping needed.
The included Fix script handles the Wine environment setup with a double-click. In earlier releases, the same step sometimes needed Terminal and a manual chmod, which tripped up anyone unfamiliar with Unix permissions.
