Frostpunk is a city-survival game where you build and run the last city on Earth in a world that has frozen over, balancing law, work hours, medical care and food to keep your population alive through the cold.
Intel Macs Only, Catalina Minimum, and a 4 GB AMD GPU
The Mac version requires a 64-bit x86 Intel processor and macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. The developer lists 16 GB RAM, 10 GB available storage, a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 and a 4 GB AMD Radeon Pro 5300M or 560X as the baseline hardware.
Does Frostpunk run on Apple Silicon Macs?
There is no native Apple Silicon build. The game runs through Rosetta 2 translation on an M1 MacBook Air with macOS Sonoma, with performance that depends on the thermal headroom of the specific machine and the size of the city on screen.
What controls and languages are available on Mac?
Interface and subtitle languages include English, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish, Simplified Chinese and Korean. Voice audio is English only. Control support matches the Steam release, with keyboard-and-mouse as the primary input scheme.
The Generator Now Survives the Storm in A New Home
Build 1927 (46330) brought bug fixes and stability improvements, but the changes most players notice day-to-day come from the free updates rolled in before this point. The game no longer ends abruptly when the storm hits in A New Home — a photo mode and an option to continue past the finale now let you linger over the city you built. That alone shifts the rhythm for anyone who found the original cutoff unsatisfying.
Endless Mode gained its three variants — Endurance, Builders and Serenity — in earlier patches, but they matter more on the current build because the random hazards generator was tuned down. Endurance still punishes overconfidence with shifting weather, but fewer runs collapse within the first three days from an unlucky hazard chain. Builders mode locks the generator behind a construction tree that forces a slower early game, which tests heat management habits formed in scenarios. Serenity strips out the survival pressure almost entirely, leaving a sandbox for experimenting with city layout and the full tech tree.
The other quiet difference: the Mac build now shares its save format cleanly with the Steam version, so cross-platform progression between a desktop and a Mac laptop is straightforward if you move the files manually.
Day 14 at –40 °C on the Rifts Map with a Second Automaton
Day 14 on the Rifts map. The temperature has held at –40 °C for two days and a scout team found a steam core in the Frostland, enough to build a second automaton. You assign it to the steelworks so the workers can double up on coal thumpers instead. The generator range upgrade pushed heat to the bunkhouses around ring three, but two medical posts are already full and the engineer count is tight. A child fell ill overnight — labour policy says they can work safe jobs, so one more gatherer is lost to the infirmary queue. The next law goes to overcrowding. Discontent ticks up four points. The book of laws records the decision with a short, blunt flavour text: "The ill are no longer entitled to privacy."
The storm forecast on the beacon screen shows three days of clear weather, then a whiteout. That means the outpost team huddled around the coal mine deposit needs a recall order within 36 hours or they freeze where they stand. You place five steam hubs along the outer industrial district, check the coal-per-day counter (372, just enough), and fast-forward through the night shift. The bell tolls at 06:00 and the generator stress meter blinks orange. This is the rhythm of Endurance — small margins, hard time limits, and a city that asks whether you can live with the rules you set.
Gathering Posts Prevent the Day-Three Sick Spike
Gathering posts are not a luxury. New players often send workers straight to resource piles and wonder why the sick count spikes by day three. A gathering post covers multiple piles, keeps workers from freezing on open ground and pays back its wood cost within two cycles. The first research priority should almost always be the beacon or the gathering post insulation upgrade, not the steam hub.
Overbuilding tents too early is another trap. The generator's starting range covers a specific footprint; building beyond it without steam hubs means people live in –20 °C from the outset. Check the heat overlay before placing anything past the second ring. The game does not warn you when you place a home outside the heated zone, just when someone gets sick later.
Scout speed matters more than it seems. The first scout unit travels slowly, and resources on the Frostland map sit at specific distances from the city. Sending a team north-west toward the "Lost Expedition" marker on day one puts steel and wood in your stockpile before the first temperature drop. Delaying scouts until day five often means running out of raw materials just as the coal demand jumps.
Law cooldowns are easy to waste. Signing a law consumes one cooldown cycle, and the clock does not pause while you deliberate. Opening the book, scrolling through the adaptation tree and hesitating between "Soup" and "Sawdust" for three minutes means your next law comes later. Decide before you click, especially in the first ten days.
Shift-Click Fills Every Workplace Slot at Once
- Shift-click assignment — hold Shift while assigning workers or engineers to a workplace and the game fills every empty slot at once, skipping the five-click sequence per building.
- Generator overdrive hotkey — press
Rto toggle overdrive. The stress bar fills slowly enough that a two-hour burst during a cold snap can save a dozen sick citizens without an emergency shift penalty. - Dismantle roads refund — roads consume no wood when built, so the 100% refund on dismantling them costs nothing. Rearranging the industrial district mid-game by deleting roads and re-placing them around new steam hubs is a free layout reset.
- Outpost team recall — select the outpost depot and click "Recall team" before a storm hits. The team returns in 24 hours instead of dying on the map. The button is small and easy to miss in the depot panel.
- Night shift on hunters' huts — hunters fly at dusk and return at dawn. If you dismantle a hunters' hut during the day and rebuild it before 18:00, the hunters still depart that evening. Good for squeezing a second hut into a tight space without losing a night's food.
- Bookmark a specific day — save files are named by in-game day and time, but manual saves let you add a note in the filename. "Day 12 pre-storm" beats scrolling through twenty autosaves when you want to replay a branch.
A player who learns the R key, the shift-click assignment, and the heat overlay toggle (T) spends half as much time in menus and reacts faster to temperature drops. None of these shortcuts are listed on the main UI, and the tutorial does not mention the dismantle refund quirk for roads. They sit in the gap between what the manual says and what a few hundred hours of play teaches.
