Your opponent, a smug Hildegard of Bingen, just pushed your sword-wielding dog into a pit of flames drawn at the edge of the parchment. You respond by having your donkey troubadour blast her last rabbit with a deafening bray from its rear end, shoving it off the page entirely. The duel sits on a single illuminated manuscript page, and every action smears more virtual ink across the field.
What does a single turn actually involve?
Each turn gives every living creature in your army one action. You pick a unit, move it within its limited zone on the parchment, and then choose to attack, shove, or use a special talent. The twist is the "Boredom" meter: if you stall or repeat the same action too often, your opponent gets extra moves. Turns end when you pass, and the opposing force then does the same.
How do you build an army before a fight?
You select from "Beasts" you have unlocked — dogs with swords, trumpet-playing donkeys, snail-eating rabbits — and place them on your side of the grid using a limited pool of Living Ink. Stronger creatures cost more ink and occupy more space. The strategic layer is in balancing a few heavy hitters against a swarm of cheaper units that can surround an enemy.
What do "Masters" do during a duel?
Your chosen historical or mythical figure, like Dante Alighieri, does not fight directly. Instead, they sit to the side and charge up special actions. You might use a Master's power to hand-stamp a stunned unit, drop a healing pot onto the page, or crush a single enemy with a giant fist from above. These abilities can reverse a bad situation but take several turns to recharge.
What happens between battles in the Journey mode?
You guide your character across a map of medieval curiosities, choosing which opponent to challenge next. Winning earns prestige and new Beasts. You also improve your Master's traits and learn new hand actions, so your little ink army grows in complexity as the duels get harder.
What the February 2023 fix build changed
Version 1.48.1.1 is a maintenance release, so nobody should expect new Beasts or map nodes. The practical effect is that several crash triggers were removed — the kind that could end a Journey run when Hildegard summoned a plague of bees onto a crowded board or when the Memento Mori event fired while you were using a Master's hand action. Stability around apocalypse events improved enough that the fire and plague cards no longer feel like a gamble on your hardware. Turn resolution is a little faster on older Intel machines, because the fix cleaned up a pathfinding hitch that could make units pause for three or four seconds before moving into a tight space. If you downloaded the game in early 2023 and hit a reproducible freeze, this build is the one that addressed it.
Turn Off Screen Shake Before It Blurs Your Grid Reads
Open the settings panel from the main menu and turn off Screen Shake. The parchment trembles on every heavy hit by default, and it gets in the way of reading the grid when three or more units are clustered. Set Move Confirm to "On" — it adds a single click to commit each movement, which prevents accidentally parking a snail next to a blade-wielding rabbit because your finger slipped. The Boredom Meter display is on by default; leave it that way. There is a toggle for Auto-End Turn that sounds convenient but often ends your turn the moment your last unit moves, before you can use a Master action. Switch that to "Off" immediately. The text language list covers twelve options including Russian, Polish and Simplified Chinese, while voice lines remain English-only. Changing the language does not alter the Inkulinati crack Mac installation path or the save directory, so it is safe to experiment even in the middle of a campaign.
