The terrain manipulator doesn't just carve ground; it recalculates voxels on the fly, letting you tunnel through a mountain or level a forest. No Man’s Sky 7.04 brings Hello Games' entire procedural universe to the Mac with a rendering pipeline rebuilt around Metal and Apple silicon. The edition ships with seven years of content updates baked in, from base building and underwater exploration to living ships and derelict freighters. Transitioning from deep space to a planet's surface happens without a loading screen, keeping the sense of scale intact.

Performance on Apple silicon benefits from the new pipeline. Cross-play is active, so the shared galaxy of discoveries, bases and player encounters spans Mac, PC and console. Upgrading a starship's hyperdrive or slotting new modules into an exosuit feeds into a loop that has no fixed endpoint. The galaxy map plots discoveries other players have made, and the catalogue of known elements, flora and fauna fills in as you scan. Russian localisation covers both interface text and full voice acting, which is rare for a port of this scope.

Smoothed Space-Station Transitions After the Patch

The Cosmos update that arrived with 7.04 did not add a headline feature, but it smoothed out the rhythm of a session. Stability fixes from the patch notes translate into fewer stutters when transitioning between a space station and the fleet outside, and fewer geometry glitches when the terrain manipulator rebuilds the ground under a base component. If you spent the weeks before the patch watching grass pop in late on an M4 Mac mini, that delay is now shorter — not gone, but cut down enough that running across a meadow no longer feels like chasing the rendering engine.

Gameplay fixes touched the refiner loop and the behaviour of sentinel drones near settlements. Before the patch, dropping three portable refiners in a row could lock one into an unresponsive state; after 7.04 the refiner inventory opens reliably. Sentinels react with less delay, which makes gathering Gravitino Balls on aggressive planets a tighter risk calculation rather than a dice roll.

The Mac-specific rendering pipeline, rewritten for Metal, does the heavy lifting under the hood. Texture streaming has improved, so warping into a new system does not leave ship panels looking like smudged paint for the first two seconds. The difference is subtle in screenshots but noticeable in motion — fewer frame-time spikes when the engine loads a planet's full biome at entry. If you are playing on a machine that also runs the game through a no man's sky download torrent on a Windows partition, the Metal version feels leaner in the menus and inventory screens, even on the same hardware.

A Trader's Afternoon on a Toxic World

A player who treats the galaxy as a logistics puzzle will see the rhythm clearly. Take a Gek trader working out of a small settlement on a planet with constant toxic rain. Her afternoon starts in the space station, buying up stocks of chlorine from passing ships. She checks the galaxy map for a system with a strong sell price — the economy scanner in her hauler highlights a nearby Korvax system with a manufacturing boom. She warps in, sells the chlorine at a 78 % markup, and uses the profit to buy wiring looms from the trade terminal. Back on her toxic home world, she refines the looms with oxygen into more chlorine, restocking for the next run. The loop is not glamorous, but it pays for the frigate expeditions she runs on the side. If she had arrived on the Mac version through a no mans sky torrent after years on console, the inventory management feels quicker — drag-and-drop with a trackpad is less fiddly than a controller for splitting stacks.

Her freighter base, built across three levels in the cargo bay, holds storage containers labelled by element group. The save point sits next to the teleporter, so she can bounce between the freighter and planetary outposts without climbing ladders. One frigate returns damaged at the end of the day; she lands on its landing pad, repairs a corroded fuel line and a cracked shield module, and sends it back out with the next expedition batch. None of this is in the patch notes for 7.04, but the stability fixes mean the freighter interior loads without the two-second black screen that used to accompany a teleport.

Surviving the Hazardous Tutorial Planet in Normal Mode

Start in a Normal-mode save, not Survival or Permadeath, while the controls settle into muscle memory. The first planet is always hazardous — the game picks one with an environmental drain to teach the hazard protection loop — so spend the opening minutes gathering ferrite dust and sodium before wandering off. Craft a portable refiner as soon as the tutorial offers it; having one in your inventory turns random minerals into useful materials without returning to a base.

Turn off Hold to Confirm in the General Options. The default requires a long press on every menu selection, which adds about a second and a half to every interaction. On a Mac with a trackpad, the delay feels out of step with the pointer speed, and disabling it makes inventory management snappier. In the Graphics Options, drop the planet quality setting one notch from Ultra if the fan noise on an Intel Mac ramps up during terrain manipulation. Apple silicon machines handle Ultra without much trouble, but the difference is barely visible during flight.

Build a base computer early, even if you do not intend to stay on the starter planet. The base gives you a teleporter anchor, and once you unlock the teleporter blueprint at the Space Anomaly (which appears after the first warp), you can return to that spot from any station. Claiming a small outpost on a planet with no sentinels and mild weather pays off within the first ten hours, especially if you need a quiet spot to rearrange storage containers.

Speed Up Planetary Approach by Dialing Back Textures

FPS drops during planetary approach. The engine compiles shaders as it loads a planet's surface. If the drop lasts more than three seconds, go into Graphics Options and set Texture Quality to Enhanced instead of Ultra. The Metal pipeline sometimes queues more textures than a 16 GB unified-memory Mac can stream smoothly during the transition.

Base parts snapping to the wrong point. The build camera can latch onto a nearby wall instead of the floor tile you are aiming at. Tap the build-mode toggle (V key) to cycle snapping points, or enter free-placement mode by pressing the left bracket key. That decouples the part from the grid and lets you nudge it with the movement keys.

Multiplayer sessions not appearing. Cross-play requires that Multiplayer is enabled in the Network settings. If you cannot see a friend's session even after they invite you, both parties should disable and re-enable Multiplayer from the in-game menu, then send a fresh invite. The handshake sometimes fails after the Mac wakes from sleep, and a toggle resets the connection.

Torrent users on older builds. If you arrived via a No Man's Sky Mac torrent that bundles an earlier version, the save format may not load under 7.04. The game will offer to convert the save on first launch, but back up the ~/Library/Application Support/HelloGames/NMS/ folder beforehand. A converted save cannot be opened again by the older build, which matters if you share the folder between two installations.

Questions on file

Does the Mac version include all the previous updates?

Yes, Hello Games states the Mac release includes all content updates from the past seven years, folded into one package.

Can I play with friends on other platforms?

Cross-play is supported, so you can explore the shared galaxy and see discoveries made by players on PC and console.
