Fifteen typed commands — call, copy, invite, relations, directions, email, FaceTime, FaceTime Audio, large type, message, Skype, Telegram, Twitter, URL, and VoIP — sit behind Cardhop's single search field. The app reads your existing macOS Contacts data without any import step, then lets you search, add, edit and interact with people by typing what you want. No clicking through address-book panels.
What 2.4.8 Refines
- Contact pictures and attached images now accept HEIC and TIFF files during selection, widening the formats beyond the usual JPEG and PNG defaults.
- Search results pick up specific text sequences inside the Notes field more reliably than before.
- Pasted email addresses are handled with cleaner parsing, so a copy-paste action lands the address in the right field on the first attempt.
- A bug that could block contact-card imports into existing contacts has been cleared out.
What Remains Unchanged
The core interaction model stays the same: a single line of text drives everything. Type a name to search, a phone number to add it, or "email Bob" to start a message. Smart groups build themselves from criteria you set, and the app ships with light and dark themes. A macOS action extension keeps Cardhop reachable from other applications without switching windows. The 2.4.8 update does not touch the fundamentals — it files down rough edges in image handling, search precision, and import reliability.
Workflow: Adding a Contact from a Business Card in Under a Minute
- Activate Cardhop with the global keyboard shortcut (default
⌘⇧C) or click the menu bar icon. The command field appears instantly, no splash screen or delay. - Snap a photo of the business card with your iPhone. The image lands in your Photos library via iCloud.
- Drag the HEIC file from a Finder window showing the Photos folder straight onto the Cardhop window. Version 2.4.8 accepts the HEIC format directly — no conversion step needed.
- Type the person's name, company, phone, and email into the command field, separated by commas:
Jane Marchetti, Studio Due, +39 02 8765 4321, [email protected]. - Press Return. Cardhop parses each chunk into the correct field — the phone number lands under "work," the email under "work" as well, and "Studio Due" fills the company name. If the pasted email had trailing whitespace, 2.4.8's improved parsing strips it automatically.
- Type
noteafter the contact's name to append a quick reminder:note Jane Marchetti met at Salone del Mobile, follow up re: lighting spec. The note attaches to her card without opening a separate editor. - Add her to the "Lighting Suppliers" group by typing
group Jane Marchetti Lighting Suppliers. If the group does not exist yet, Cardhop creates it on the fly and places her inside. - Copy her studio address to the clipboard:
copy Janeopens a popover with her full card; click the address field, and it copies as structured text ready for a shipping label.
How Cardhop Fits with Other Apps and macOS Features
Cardhop does not replace Apple Contacts — it sits on top of the same data store. Any change made in Cardhop appears in Contacts.app and vice versa within seconds, because both apps use the same Core Data-backed address book database under ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. This means other apps that read from Contacts — Mail, Messages, Calendar, and third-party tools like Fantastical or BusyContacts — see the updated information without any sync delay.
The macOS action extension integrates directly into the Share menu. Highlight a phone number inside a Mail message, invoke Share, and select Cardhop. The number pre-fills the command field, so typing call and Return dials it through your iPhone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi calling. For FaceTime Audio, type facetimeaudio instead. The same extension works from Safari, Notes, and any text selection that macOS recognises as contact data.
Smart groups feed into other workflows through the Contacts ecosystem. Build a smart group for "clients with birthdays next month," and Apple Calendar picks it up for its birthday calendar. The group appears in Mail's address autocomplete, so typing the group name addresses everyone at once. A cardhop mac download that replaces manual contact management means these cross-app links stay current without maintaining duplicate lists.
Large Phone Numbers for Reading Across the Room
- Large type for phone numbers: Type
large Janeand Cardhop displays the contact's primary phone number in a window-filling font — useful when reading a number across the room to someone dialling a desk phone. - Invite action with one command:
invite Alex meeting Thursday 3pmcreates a Calendar event with Alex as the invitee, pulling their email from the contact card. No switching to Calendar.app required. - Relations field lookup: Typing
relations Mariashows linked contacts — spouse, manager, assistant — as nested entries. Click one to jump to that person's card directly. - Recent contacts list: Press the down arrow in an empty command field to see the last ten contacts you interacted with, ordered by recency. Start typing to filter the list further.
- Dark and light theme toggle: The app follows your macOS appearance setting by default, but
⌘Dswitches themes manually. The dark theme dims the contact card's background without reducing text contrast. - Printing labels and envelopes: Select a contact or a group, then choose File → Print. Cardhop offers envelope, label sheet, and list layouts with standard Avery templates pre-configured. Address formatting follows the contact's country code automatically.
- Directory search fix in 2.4.8: Searches that include directory results (LDAP, Exchange GAL, or CardDAV directories) no longer drop entries that matched in earlier versions. A search for a name that exists both locally and on an Exchange server now returns both results consistently.
- Shortcuts integration corrected: Property labels inside Shortcuts actions — like distinguishing "home" from "work" phone numbers — now appear with the correct label text instead of a generic placeholder.
- Search — Improved results for specific text sequences in the Notes field.
- Email handling — Improved parsing of pasted email addresses.
- Images — Improved support for selecting HEIC and TIFF files as contact pictures and attached images.
- Import — Fixed a failure that could occur when importing contact cards into existing contacts.
- Shortcuts — Fixed incorrect property labels in Shortcuts actions.
- Directory results — Fixed some searches missing directory results.
- macOS 11 or later
- Intel and Apple Silicon Macs
